Proverbs - XVI

 

• সৌন্দর্য ধরা পড়ে চোখে আর জ্ঞান ধরা পড়ে অন্তরে।
  Charm strikes the sight, merit wins the soul .
  External beauty strikes our eyesight and inner qualities impress our soul.
• সস্তার তিন অবস্থা।
  Cheap and nasty.

  Cheap goods are dear in the long run.
  Avoid buying cheap goods.
• প্রতারক জীবনে উন্নতি করতে পারে না ।
  Cheats never prosper .
  Cheats always fail in the long run.

• বুড়ো শালিকের ঘাড়ে রোঁ।
  Childish behavior of an old man .
  Acting like the young in one’s old age
• শিশু এবং বোকারাই সত্য বলে ।
  Children and fools tell the truth .
  No knowledgeable person tells the truth.
• ভালো হতে পয়সা লাগে না ।
  Civility/courtesy costs nothing .
  One needs not spend money to be good.
• ফরসা কাপড়ে মান বাড়ে
  পরিষ্কার পরিচ্ছন্নতা ঈশ্বরভক্তির একটি ধাপ ।
  Cleanliness is next to godliness.
  Cleanliness is a step to devotion to God.
• বেশ ভূষা দ্বারা মানুষ চেনা যায়।

• আকাশকুসুম কল্পণা করা।
  Build castles in the air.
  
• নিজের নাক কেটে পরের যাত্রা ভঙ্গ করা।
  Burn not thy fingers to snuff another man's candle.
  
• নিজের নাক কেটে অপরের যাত্রা ভঙ্গ করো না ।
  Burn not your house to fright the mouse away .
  Don’t cut your nose to spite another’s face.
• কাজও নাই, কামাইও নাই।
  Busy about nothing or No work, no leisure or It is all bustle.
  
• বিপদই প্রকৃত কষ্টিপাথর ।
  Calamity is man’s true touchstone .
  Sweet are the uses of adversity.
• স্পষ্টাস্পষ্টি কথা বলা ।
  Call a spade a spade .
  Speak plain and spare none.
• অতি যত্নে মরণফাঁদ।
  Care killed the cat.
  
• তেলা মাথায় তেল দেওয়া ।
  Carry coal to new castle .
  Help one who needs no help.
• অনিশ্চিতের আশায় নিশ্চিত ত্যাগ করা ।
  Cast at the shadow and lose the substance .
  one must not lose a certain in the hope of an uncertain.
• আগে ঘর তারপর পর
  আগে ঘর, তবে ত পর; আত্মরেখে ধর্ম ।
  Charity begins at home.

Proverbs - XIV

 

• একই গোয়ালের গরু।
  Birds of the same feather.
  
• চোরে চোরে মাসতুত ভাই।
  Birds of the same feather flock together.
  
• কয়লা ধুলে ময়লা যায় না ।
  Black will take no other hue .
  An Ethiopian will never change his skin; one cannot change his nature; the leopard cannot change its spots.
• দাঁত থাকতে দাঁতের মর্যাদা জানে না।
  Blessings are not valued till they are gone.
  Men are always neglectful to their blessings.
• রক্তের টান বড় টান।
  Blood is thicker than water.
  The tie of kindred is real.
• গোবরে পদ্মফুল।
  Blossoms in the dust or Musk in a kennel.
  
• দূরের জিনিস ভালো মনে হয় ।
  Blue are the hills that are far from us .
  Distance lends enchantment to the view, grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, heard melodies are sweet but those unheard are sweeter.
• দুধ কলা দিয়ে সাপ পোষা।
  Breed up a crow, and it will pluck your eyes.
  
• মানিকের খানিক ভালো ।
  Brevity is the soul of wit .
  A few qualified things are preferable to a lot of unqualified things.

  Bright gem in a dark cave.

Proverbs - XII

 

• যেমন কর্ম তেমন ফল ।
  As you make your bed, so you must lie on it .
  You must pay for the evil you do.
• যেমন কর্ম তেমন ফল।
  As you sow so you reap.
  As you brew, so you drink.
• লোভে পাপ, পাপে মৃত্যু।
  Avarice begets sin and sin begets death.
  
• মাথা নেই তার মাথা ব্যথা।
  Bachelors’ wives and maids’ children are always well taught.
  To be worried about things that do not matter.
• যত গর্জে তত বর্ষে না ।
  Barking dogs seldom bite .
  Angry words and threats lead to nothing worse; much cry and little wool.
• সোনার চামচ মুখে নিয়ে জন্মান; সচ্ছল পরিবারে জন্মগ্রহন করা।
  Be born with a silver spoon in one’s mouth .
  Be born into wealth and privilege
• জরু, গরু, ধান, তিন রাখে বিদ্যমান।
  Be mindful of your wife, kine and paddy.
  
• বিয়ে করতে কড়ি, ঘর বাঁধতে দড়ি।
  Be sure before you marry of a house wherein to tarry.
  Think twice before you take a risk.
• যার নুন খাও তার গুণ গাও।
  Be true to your salt.
  
• দ্রষ্টার চোখেই সৌন্দর্য থাকে ।
  Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder.
  Different people have different ideas about what is beautiful.

Proverbs - XII

 

• প্রতিকারের চেয়ে প্রতিরোধ ভালো ।
  An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure .
  Prevention is better than cure.
• অকালে কী না খায়।
  Any food is good enough when there is a famine.
  At the time of want any food available is good.
• দিল্লীকা লাড্ডু।
  Apple of sodom or Dead sea apple.
  
• বিদ্যা অনন্ত, জীবন সংক্ষিপ্ত ।
  Art is long, life is short .
  Life is too short for all that we have to learn.
• অবলার মুখই বল ।
  Arthur could not tame a woman’s tongue .
  None can control a woman’s tongue.
• যেমনি বুনো ওল, তেমনি বাঘা তেঁতুল ।

• ভাগের মা গঙ্গা পায় না।
  An ass that is a common property is always worst saddle .
  Everybody’s business is nobody’s business.
• পেটে খাবার আর পকেটে টাকা না থাকলে কোন কাজ ঠিকমতো করা যায় না।
  An empty sack cannot stand upright.
  A poor or hungry person cannot function properly.
• চোখের বদলে চোখ।

  A tooth for a tooth.
• অলস মস্তিষ্ক শয়তানের কারখানা।

• তত্ত্বের চেয়ে প্রায়োগিক জ্ঞান গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।
  An ounce of common sense is worth a pound of theory .
  Common sense will help you solve problems more than theory will.
• বুদ্ধির চেয়ে বিচক্ষণতা ভালো ।
  An ounce of discretion is worth a pound of wit .
  Knowing when to refrain from making jokes is better than being able to make jokes all the time.

• নিজের জিনিস সকলেই ভালো দেখে ।
  All his geese are swans .
  one’s own things are the best.
• ভালোবাসা এবং যুদ্ধে সবকিছুই বৈধ
  ভালোবাসা এবং যুদ্ধে কোন নিয়মনীতি নেই ।
  All is fair in love and war.
  
• সুখের সময়গুলো দ্রুত চলে যায় ।
  All our sweetest hours fly fastest .
  man’s marry days are very transient.
• পক্ষপাতদুষ্ট লোকের নিকট সবাই মন্দ ।
  All seems yellow to the jaundiced eye .
  To biased mind everything is in fault.
• চকচক করলেই সোনা হয় না।
  All that glitters is not gold.
  Trust not appearance, appearances are deceptive.
• পুরোনো চাল ভাতে বাড়ে।

  Old age or experience has great value.
• যে সহে সে রহে; সবুরে মেওয়া ফলে।

  Patience is bitter but its fruit is sweet.
• শেষ রক্ষাই রক্ষা; মধুরেণ সমাপয়াত; সব ভালো তার, শেষ ভালো যার।
  All well that ends well .
  It is all right if it turns on well in the end.

• দিনে একটা আপেল খেলে কখনও ডাক্তারের কাছে যেতে হয় না।
  An apple a day keeps the doctor away .
  Apples are so nutritious that if one eats an apple everyday, he/she will be healthy and disease less.

  Adversity often leads to prosperity .
  Misery has its sequel in happiness
• ঝড় থেমে গেলে সব কিছু শান্ত হয়।
  After a storm comes a calm.

• মেঘ দেখে করিসনে ভয়,আড়ালে তার সূর্য হাসে ।
  After clouds comes fair weather.

• চোর পালালে বুদ্ধি বাড়ে।

• নুন আনতে পান্তা ফুরায়।
  After meat comes mustard .
  Hunger waits for no delicacy
• যত হাসি তত কান্না বলে গেছে রাম শর্মা।
  After sweet meat comes sour sauce .
  If you laugh today, you may cry tomorrow.
• যত দোষ নন্দ ঘোষ।
  All are blaming "nobody".

  Appearances may be deceptive.
• অতি লোভে তাঁতি নষ্ট।

• লোভে পাপ পাপে মৃত্যু ।
  A varice begets sin, sin begets death .
  one sin is followed by another and leads to destruction.
• অপেক্ষার সময় শেষ হয় না ।
  A watched pot never boils .
  Seemingly long time it takes water to boil when you are waiting for it.
• দিল্লীর লাড্ডু - খেলেও পস্তাবে, না খেলেও পস্তাবে।
  A wish, gained or lost, leaves one unsatisfied in either case.
  
• ছদ্মবেশী শত্রু; বাইরে দেখতে ভালো, ভিতরে খারাপ।

  A sleeping fox catches no poultry .

  If a man speaks meekly to someone who is angry to him, that person will come down

• কারো সাথে ভাগাভাগি করলে সমস্যা অর্ধেক হয়ে যায়।
  A trouble shared is a trouble halved .
  If one tells someone about a problem he is having, or request someone’s help with a problem, the problem will not seem so daunting.
